Hi There!

My name is Laney and, as you might have guessed, I'm SUPER into hockey. But more importantly, I'm a first-generation student at the University of Michigan.

For me, it felt like there were a lot of things I didn't know as a first-gen student — things I wished I'd known coming in. That's why I made this scouting report! Here, you can find resources, information, stats, and stories; all compiled in one place to help make the adjustment just a little bit easier, hopefully :)

Sports have their own little "study guides" for what you need to know — a notes package, a roundup, a scouting report. These guides contain a lot of the important information you need to know on a week-by-week basis, ranging from top matchups to players to watch for.

I work in hockey, so I make study guides like these all of the time. They're helpful, and they're useful — and I can't help but wish I'd had one as a first-gen student coming into a school as big and as intimidating as Michigan. This study guide will contain four sections to help provide information to first-gen students at Michigan, hopefully to help the adjustment be a little less of an adjustment and a little more of a fun experience. The four sections of this scouting report are:

1. Quick Hits: This section will provide a lot of the statistical, logistical information on first-gen students at the University of Michigan (filled in with lots of little infographics to truly enhance the scouting experience!) This can include numbers, background information, and enrollment data for first-gen students to get a sense of the community available at Michigan.

2. Plays to Watch For: This will hopefully give first-gen students a sense of what's available to them on campus: clubs, organizations, learning communities and extra resources geared towards students who are completely new to the college experience.

3. Penalties: Ouch. This section is exactly what it sounds like; things that Michigan could be doing better. Here, you'll find some suggestions for what Michigan could be doing better, based on research of other schools and interviews with other first-gen students.

4. RoundupWhat's our overall feel of being first-gen students at Michigan? How do we navigate a school with resources and penalties and all sorts of other things to watch for? Here, I'll reflect a little on my experience to hopefully help provide some navigational tips moving forward.

Feel free to go in any order you want — all sections are meant to be informational (but hopefully, a little fun too.) Enjoy!
