There's a lot of information about hockey teams. You've got rosters, stats, background information, personnel and staff, mascots, leagues, regions, etc., etc.

Similarly, there's a lot of important stuff for first-gen students to know, especially coming into a big school like Michigan. There isn't a ton of available data — this certainly won't be a 30-page scouting report by any means — but I've complied what I could find in order to make some information more accessible (and fun to read with infographics!)
Basics — First-Gen
Before jumping into the numbers of first-gen students at Michigan, it's important to know who and what you're talking about (it's hard to gauge a collective team if you don't know the players, right?) A few quick hits on first-gen students in the U.S. (information retrieved from the U.S Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics in 2018):

-
There are around 7.3 million undergraduates in the U.S., and about 20 percent of those 7.3 million are first-gen students
-
Out of the (roughly) 1.46 million first-gen students in the U.S., 50 percent are from low-income families
-
Thirty-three percent of overall first-gen students drop out of college after three years, compared to 14 percent of non first-gen students
Basics — First-Gen at 'M'
Michigan has been a little stingy with the data on first-gen students, as most of it is pretty recent or, in most cases, nonexistent (or maybe just invisible to the public eye — it's not really clear.) Either way, the data isn't extensive, but it's enough for a few quick hits:
-
A first-gen student at Michigan is defined as being "...the first in your family to attend and graduate from college."

-
Out of Michigan's entire student body, 14 percent are first-gen students (roughly 4,000 in a crowd of nearly 30,000)

-
Michigan's first-gen population is GROWING (up 7.8 percent per freshman class through nine years)

-
Michigan is creating more and more academic resources in order to accommodate an increasing number of first-gen students (see "Plays to Watch For" for more information on these)
