What is this and why do I care?

I'm so happy you asked! The wonderful world of sport journalism — whether you read it in print or retweet it online — has been supported (and at times, sustained) by some of the most amazing people on earth: sports photojournalists.

Unfortunately, these photographers don't get enough credit. Similarly, some of their favorite pictures don't get enough credit, either. People get so wrapped up in the shot that they don't even think to credit the photographer; and writers get so wrapped up in their articles that they don't think to ask the photographer what the best shot for an article would be. Which picture had the most emotion? Which picture had the best contrast? Which picture matters the most?

Instead, we're often left with whatever photo the writer wants to use — if a writer is writing about a defensive end, chances are they're going to ask for a shot of DE in action. But if you ask the photographer, they might tell you to use the shot of defensive ends locking arms before a game in solidarity. You never know.

Spurred by a series of experiments (which you can read more about here), this website is a home to some of sports photojournalism's best pictures. Whether they were run in print or not, they're here in all their glory to be adored by you. Along the way, you can explore the thoughts of four sports photographers at the Michigan Daily — Amelia Cacchione, Zoey Holstrom, Evan Aaron and Katelyn Mulcahy — by hovering your mouse above any of their top five sports photos.

Enjoy! (And don't forget to credit the photogs)
