Q: What do you like about photojournalism?

“I've always been fascinated with how cameras work and like taking old cameras apart and putting them back together. I'm studying mechanical engineering, and I want to go into the engineering side of film, or like working for Nikon and making parts for cameras.”

Q: What keeps you interested so that you want a career in this field?

“I think that's sort of what's kept me hooked, being so fascinated by how the camera works and also just the essence of how you are capturing a moment. You know, the cliche photographer answer.”

Q: Do you have any specific experiences that you've liked?

“I love being there, in the moment. There's not many experiences like sitting on the basketball court or being on the field in the Big House. You're just right there. That access we get is just so cool. I was at the Houston game and I was just nauseous, and I remember Beilien came over to the bench, before that last play, and he was like, 'What's the best play we got?' and I was like, 'Oh, shit.' And I remember watching that happen and being like, 'Of course he made it. Of course.'”

Q: Is it ever difficult being a sports photographer?

“Its like in football season, I wanted to split up the games half and half. I want to be a student for Michigan State, I wanted to be a student for the night game and be there for that. And then Ohio State, I wanted to be on the field for that. It's a mix.”

Q: What types of photos do you like the best?

“I like photos  that are close, where you can really see the access of the photographer. Like when you're on the baseline and they're driving the ball down the baseline, and he has his arm wide open and I'm right there, those are my favorite basketball shots. Football, obviously, when they come up right to you and start like screaming at you... Hockey also, like the first time I shot hockey I was scared shitless. Because they hit the boards and the boards like move, they move!”

Q: Is it frustrating that you guys don't get to pick the pictures?

“That's something we've been talking about a lot lately. I'll go to the average basketball game and take about 1,500 photos. We put maybe 10 photos in the gallery, three more in other stories, and the rest just sit in my hard drive or I'll put some on Facebook. There's so much more in types of photos that we don't get to use in traditional editorial format so that having a photo blog that we have in development where we can share those photos is really cool.”
